The state of friendship, 2026: adult friendship by the numbers

If making friends as an adult feels harder than it used to, that's not in your head. It's measurable, and it's happening to almost everyone.
We started NexSpark Friends because so many people who came to us for dating said the same quiet thing: what I really need is friends. Here's the sourced picture of why that's so common right now. Every figure links to its source; a full list is at the bottom. For the dating side of the same story, our sister site has the numbers on loneliness and dating.
The friendship recession is real
Over three decades, Americans' close friendships have thinned dramatically, and it's steepest among men, a decline we dug into separately in why men have fewer friends as they get older.

It's part of a bigger loneliness epidemic
Friendship isn't the only kind of connection in decline. In 2023 the U.S. Surgeon General issued a public-health advisory calling loneliness a national epidemic.

Why it got so hard
The structures that used to manufacture friendship, dorms, teams, classes, first jobs where everyone's new together, fall away in adulthood, and nothing automatically replaces them.

of shared time it takes, on average, to turn a stranger into a close friend (about 50 hours to a casual friend, 90 to a friend). More on the science behind this, or work out your own timeline.
Hall, 2018 (Journal of Social & Personal Relationships)
That's the quiet math behind the recession: adult life is engineered to prevent exactly those repeated hours together. You don't lack the skill, you lack the room.
Your people are already here. They moved to this city the same year you did. They're wondering where you are, too.
Transplant cities make it sharper, and more fixable
It hits hardest in a transplant city, anywhere people arrive every week for a job knowing almost no one, social, interesting, fully capable of friendship, just without the room where their people already are. That's a hard problem, but a solvable one: it mostly comes down to putting compatible people in the same place, more than once, with a little structure so nobody has to be the brave one. If you're starting from zero, we wrote the practical version, how to make friends as an adult, and the reasons it gets harder after 30. And if you already have a friend or two but the effort only ever runs one direction, that's worth naming too, here are the signs of a one-sided friendship. Even the smallest first step, what to say to a table of near-strangers, has a playbook: 134 icebreaker questions sorted by situation.
That's the whole idea behind a Circle, four to six compatible people near you, with a shared anchor interest, and a first meetup we help plan. Low pressure, repeated time, someone else at the table to carry the lull: the exact conditions the research says friendship actually needs.

NexSpark Matchmaking is a separate service on a separate site, run by the same people and built on the same compatibility work. Entirely optional and nothing to do with your Circle. If you are curious how it works, read what a matchmaker actually costs.
